Delhi's air quality marginally improves but remains in poor category through weekend

Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index of 223 on Wednesday, crossing into the 'poor' category for the first time this season. While the reading represents a slight improvement from earlier measurements, air quality remains significantly degraded and poses health risks for residents, particularly vulnerable groups including children, elderly citizens, and those with respiratory conditions.

Meteorological departments have forecast that poor air quality will continue to grip the capital through October 25. The persistence of harmful pollution levels is attributed to prevailing weather patterns that limit atmospheric dispersion of particulates and other pollutants. Stagnant air conditions and reduced wind speeds are trapping contaminants over the Delhi-National Capital Region, preventing their dispersal.

The poor air quality episode comes as the region enters its seasonal pollution crisis period. Meteorologists attribute the deterioration to multiple factors including vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and meteorological conditions that restrict vertical mixing of air layers. Weather agencies advise residents to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers where possible until conditions improve.

Authorities have not yet announced emergency measures such as odd-even vehicle schemes or construction bans, typically implemented when air quality reaches severe levels. However, residents are advised to monitor official air quality updates and take necessary precautions to minimize exposure to polluted air during the forecast period.
