Delhi's air quality plummets to hazardous levels in under four days

Delhi's air quality has undergone a precipitous decline, with the Air Quality Index climbing from moderate levels of 124 to hazardous readings exceeding 400 within a span of just four days. The rapid escalation has prompted heightened alert among environmental and health agencies monitoring the capital's atmospheric conditions.

The severe spike in pollution levels is typically attributed to a combination of meteorological factors and seasonal patterns common to this period. During late autumn and early winter months, Delhi frequently experiences sharp increases in air pollution due to reduced wind speeds, lower temperatures, and atmospheric conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground.

Contributing factors to the deteriorating air quality include increased vehicular emissions, construction dust, and agricultural burning in neighboring states, particularly Punjab and Haryana. The convergence of these pollution sources, combined with unfavorable weather patterns, creates conditions that rapidly degrade atmospheric quality across the national capital region.

The hazardous AQI readings have triggered concerns about public health, particularly for vulnerable populations including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Air quality experts have recommended that residents limit outdoor exposure, use air purifiers indoors, and monitor official air quality advisories for guidance on protective measures.
