Delhi's air quality plummets to severe levels as toxic haze blankets capital

Delhi's air quality deteriorated sharply, with multiple monitoring stations across the National Capital Region registering Air Quality Index readings in the severe zone on Tuesday. The overall AQI climbed to 366, indicating hazardous conditions that pose significant health risks to the general population, particularly vulnerable groups including children, elderly persons, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

More than 20 air quality monitoring stations across Delhi recorded severe pollution levels, with several areas experiencing near-zero visibility in certain pockets. The toxic haze blanketed major parts of the capital, prompting health authorities to issue advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers where available.

Experts attributed the sharp deterioration to a combination of factors including reduced wind speed, low temperatures that trap pollutants near the ground, and increased vehicular and industrial emissions. The meteorological conditions have hindered the dispersal of pollutants, allowing them to accumulate in the atmosphere and creating a dense smog layer over the city.

Authorities recommended that schools and offices consider shifting to online modes of operation where feasible. The Delhi government's pollution control measures, including restrictions on construction activities and advisory against use of personal vehicles, remained in effect as officials monitored air quality trends closely.
