Delhi's Air Quality Plummets to 'Severe' Levels Post-Diwali

Delhi's air quality is expected to deteriorate sharply to 'severe' levels following Diwali festivities, as festive emissions combine with peak stubble-burning season and ongoing vehicular pollution. The national capital faced 'very poor' air quality on Diwali itself, with conditions forecast to worsen significantly in the coming days.

Delhi's air quality crisis intensified during Diwali celebrations, with pollution levels climbing to 'very poor' status as fireworks and festivities compounded existing environmental challenges. Authorities have warned that conditions will deteriorate further, with forecasts predicting a 'severe' air quality index by Monday as multiple pollution sources converge across the region.

The sharp deterioration comes as three major factors align to create hazardous air conditions. Diwali festivities, including widespread firecracker usage, coincide with the peak stubble-burning season in neighbouring Punjab and Haryana, where farmers clear agricultural fields ahead of the winter crop cycle. Additionally, vehicular emissions continue to contribute significantly to the capital's pollution burden during the festive period.

The 'severe' air quality classification represents one of the highest pollution levels on India's air quality index scale, typically associated with health advisories for vulnerable populations. Such conditions can affect respiratory systems and visibility, often necessitating restrictions on outdoor activities and construction work.

Environmental agencies are monitoring the situation closely, as Delhi historically experiences some of its worst air quality during the post-harvest burning season, which typically extends through October and November. Residents have been advised to track daily air quality updates and take appropriate precautions during the predicted severe pollution episode.
