Delhi's air quality plummets to 'very poor' ahead of festive season

New Delhi is grappling with severe air pollution as the festive season approaches, with nearly two-thirds of the capital's monitoring stations recording hazardous air quality levels. The deterioration raises concerns about the impact of Diwali celebrations on the city's already compromised air quality.

Delhi's air quality plummets to 'very poor' ahead of festive season

Air quality across Delhi has reached concerning levels, with data from 59 monitoring stations on Sunday revealing widespread pollution. Of these, 12 stations recorded readings in the 'severe' category, while 22 stations registered 'very poor' air quality, indicating that approximately 57 per cent of the monitored areas are experiencing hazardous conditions.

The timing of the pollution spike coincides with the approach of Diwali, when residents traditionally light firecrackers as part of celebrations. Environmental experts have long flagged the festival season as a critical period for air quality deterioration in the national capital, as emissions from firecrackers compound existing pollution from vehicular traffic, industrial activity, and seasonal factors.

Delhi's air quality typically worsens during winter months due to meteorological conditions that trap pollutants near the ground. The current readings underscore the compounding effect of these seasonal patterns alongside human activities, raising questions about mitigation measures ahead of the festive period.

Environmental authorities have previously recommended restrictions on firecracker sales and public awareness campaigns during Diwali to help manage air pollution levels. The latest data suggests that such measures may be particularly critical this year, given the already elevated pollution baseline being recorded across the city's monitoring network.
