Delhi's Air Quality Plunges to 'Very Poor' as Winter Pollution Curbs Begin

Delhi's air quality nosedived into the 'very poor' category on Wednesday as winter pollution curbs came into force across the region. The Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 307 at multiple monitoring stations, with Jahangirpuri in northwest Delhi recording the most severe reading of 417, the highest in the capital. The hazardous air quality prompted authorities to activate emergency pollution control measures already announced for the winter months.

Neighbouring Noida in Uttar Pradesh also witnessed alarming air quality deterioration, with its AQI surpassing 300 and entering the 'very poor' category. The rapid spike in pollution levels across the National Capital Region reflects the confluence of factors typical during winter months, including temperature inversions, reduced wind speed, and agricultural burning in neighbouring states.

The 'very poor' air quality classification presents serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Health authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor activities and use air purifiers indoors.

The implementation of winter curbs includes restrictions on diesel vehicles, construction activities, and non-essential industrial operations in a bid to mitigate the seasonal air quality crisis. Weather forecasters indicated that atmospheric conditions were expected to remain unfavourable for the next few days, potentially prolonging the hazardous air quality episode across the region.
