Delhi's entry and exit points experienced severe congestion on Thursday as multiple factors converged to create transportation chaos across the national capital region. The bottlenecks arose from a combination of enhanced pollution monitoring checkpoints and heightened security measures related to a large-scale rally organised by opposition INDIA bloc parties, which drew thousands of supporters to the city.
Automobile emissions inspections, typically conducted during periods of elevated air pollution, became a focal point of delays as officials intensified random vehicle checks at key border crossings. Simultaneously, the political gathering necessitated additional security screening and crowd management operations, further reducing the throughput capacity of major entry routes into the city.
Traffic officials reported significant backup at all major border crossings, with vehicles queued for extended periods during peak hours. Commuters travelling to and from neighbouring states faced delays spanning 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on the specific crossing point and time of day. The situation prompted authorities to issue advisories requesting travellers to utilise alternate routes and plan for extended journey times.
While pollution control measures remain a regular fixture during Delhi's winter months, the overlap with large public gatherings created unprecedented strain on the city's peripheral infrastructure. Transport officials indicated that normal traffic flow was expected to resume once the political event concluded and enhanced security protocols were withdrawn from border areas.
