Delhi's Dussehra celebrations take quirky turn with giant cockroach effigy

Delhi's Dussehra celebrations this year will feature an unusual twist, as event organizers incorporate modern symbolism into the ancient Hindu festival. The Lav Kush Ramlila, traditionally staged at the Red Fort grounds, will showcase a distinctive scene during the Ravana Dahan ceremony, marking a departure from conventional festivities.

In Pitampura, the Sri Keshav Ramlila Committee has undertaken preparations to burn a 30-foot-tall cockroach effigy alongside the traditional effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad. The mammoth insect-shaped structure represents organizers' effort to blend contemporary concerns with age-old traditions during the ten-day festival celebrating the victory of good over evil.

The decision to include the oversized cockroach reflects growing concerns about urban pest infestations and sanitation issues that plague many Delhi neighborhoods. By incorporating the symbol into the ritualistic burning, organizers aim to send a message about the need to combat common household and public health nuisances.

The modifications to this year's Dussehra celebrations highlight how India's traditional festivals continue to evolve, incorporating modern social messaging while maintaining their core spiritual and cultural significance. Similar adaptations have been seen in previous years, with organizers using Ravana Dahan ceremonies to highlight various social issues affecting urban populations.
