Delhi's Fire Safety Preparedness Hampered by Unplanned Growth, Officials Warn

New Delhi — Roughly 80 percent of Delhi's built environment lacks proper planning, creating mounting fire risks across the capital, Delhi Fire Services Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik said Tuesday. Speaking about the city's fire-safety preparedness, Malik highlighted a combination of structural vulnerabilities that threaten public safety and hamper emergency response efforts.

Unplanned construction remains a primary concern, compounded by weak enforcement of fire-safety regulations and inadequate compliance from developers and building occupants. The city's congested road networks further restrict access for firefighting vehicles, delaying response times to emergencies. These infrastructure shortcomings expose millions of Delhi residents to preventable fire hazards.

Manpower constraints within the fire services department add another layer of vulnerability. Despite the scale of fire risks across the sprawling metropolis, the department operates with insufficient personnel to adequately monitor compliance, conduct inspections and maintain preparedness standards. Malik's assessment indicates that the city's overall fire-safety preparedness remains at an average level.

The fire chief identified changing fire risks as an emerging challenge, as Delhi's urban landscape continues to evolve with new construction patterns and commercial developments. Addressing the gaps requires coordinated action across multiple stakeholders, including stricter enforcement of building codes, improved infrastructure to facilitate emergency access, and enhanced resource allocation to the fire services.
