Delhi's firecracker ban remains firm ahead of Diwali 2026

Delhi's blanket ban on firecrackers continues to hold firm as the capital prepares for Diwali 2026, maintaining restrictions that have been in place across the calendar year. The prohibition, which applies to the manufacture, sale, and bursting of firecrackers, remains one of the strictest environmental measures adopted by any Indian metropolis.

The Supreme Court has recently initiated a review of the firecracker restrictions, weighing whether limited relaxations might be permitted during the festival season. However, the court's examination has also highlighted significant concerns about inconsistent enforcement of its previous orders, raising questions about ground-level implementation by municipal and police authorities.

The Delhi government has indicated no plans to lift the ban for Diwali, citing persistent air quality challenges and health concerns during winter months. The restriction encompasses all categories of firecrackers, including those marketed as "green" or low-emission alternatives.

Environmental groups have largely supported the continuation of the ban, citing studies linking firecracker emissions to seasonal spikes in air pollution across the National Capital Region. Citizens are being encouraged to celebrate Diwali through alternative, non-polluting methods.
