Delhi's iconic Jantar Mantar protest site stripped of demonstration status
India's capital has revoked the iconic Jantar Mantar's designation as an authorized protest venue, redirecting demonstrations to alternative sites up to 30 kilometres away. The Ramlila Grounds, Burari Grounds, and CBD Ground have been notified as the new designated protest locations.

Delhi authorities have formally denotified Jantar Mantar, the historic plaza near Parliament that has served as the primary venue for public demonstrations and protests for decades, according to official notifications. The decision will require protesters to relocate to alternative locations spread across the city's periphery.
Three sites have been designated to accommodate future demonstrations: Ramlila Grounds, Burari Grounds, and CBD Ground. The Ramlila Grounds, situated in central Delhi near the Red Fort, lies approximately 3-4 kilometres from Jantar Mantar. Burari Grounds, located in North Delhi, is roughly 20-25 kilometres away, while the CBD Ground in Dwarka extends approximately 25-30 kilometres from the traditional protest epicenter.
Jantar Mantar has historically hosted significant demonstrations, including labour protests, farmers' agitations, and political rallies. The venue's centrality to government institutions and high media visibility made it a preferred location for activists seeking to draw attention to their causes. The relocation requirement may significantly impact the logistics and visibility of future public demonstrations in the capital.
Authorities have not provided official reasoning for the denotification, though officials indicate the new designated sites maintain adequate infrastructure and capacity for organizing protests. The change marks a notable shift in Delhi's protest landscape and public demonstration policies.
