The Ministry of Home Affairs has removed Jantar Mantar's long-standing status as an authorized venue for protests and demonstrations, according to an official notification issued on Friday. The decision marks a significant shift in protest dynamics in the national capital, where the historic site has served as a focal point for civil society activism and political agitation for decades.
In place of Jantar Mantar, the central government has notified three designated locations where demonstrations, sit-ins, and protest activities may be conducted in compliance with applicable regulations. These officially recognized protest sites are intended to streamline and regulate public demonstrations across Delhi.
The move effectively restricts spontaneous and unauthorized protests at Jantar Mantar, one of India's most recognizable symbols of democratic expression. The site, located in central Delhi near major government offices, has historically witnessed numerous high-profile demonstrations by civil society groups, farmers, students, and political organizations.
The government's decision to designate specific protest venues comes as authorities continue efforts to manage large-scale demonstrations and maintain order in the capital. All future protests and agitations in Delhi must now comply with the new notification and utilize only the three officially designated locations.
