Delhi's September air quality marks five-year improvement

Delhi's air quality has shown marked improvement in recent months, with September recording a monthly average Air Quality Index of 102—the cleanest September reading in five years. The metric, which gauges concentrations of particulate matter and other pollutants, offers a positive indicator ahead of the winter months when air quality typically deteriorates across the capital.

The improvement extends beyond a single month. From January through September this year, Delhi registered 194 days with an AQI reading below 200, representing the highest count of such days recorded over the corresponding nine-month period in the past five years. An AQI below 200 is generally considered acceptable for most of the population, though vulnerable groups may still experience health effects.

The gains come as Delhi implements various air quality management measures, including stricter emission controls and monitoring protocols. Environmental experts attribute the improvement to a combination of factors, including construction management, vehicular emission standards, and weather patterns that have aided pollutant dispersal during certain periods.

Despite the positive trend, air quality specialists caution that sustained improvement requires continued focus on pollution sources. The capital typically faces severe air quality challenges during winter months, particularly from October through February, when atmospheric conditions trap pollutants and concentrations spike significantly.
