Delhi seeks liquor imports bids as India-UK pact halves UK duties
India's capital is inviting applications from liquor importers following a bilateral trade agreement that has significantly reduced customs duties on spirits from the United Kingdom. The move is expected to make imported alcoholic beverages more competitively priced for Delhi consumers.

The Delhi excise department has issued a call for applications from importers and traders looking to capitalise on reduced tariffs under the recently concluded India-UK trade pact. The bilateral agreement has substantially lowered the customs duty burden on specified liquor imports from Britain, presenting an opportunity to bring down retail prices in the national capital.
According to the excise department, the trade agreement has cut the aggregate effective customs duty on designated spirits imported from the UK from 150 per cent to 75 per cent. This represents a significant reduction that could translate into lower consumer prices for imported whisky, gin, rum, and other spirits currently sold at premium rates in Delhi's retail market.
The application process is part of the department's effort to facilitate smoother trade flows and allow importers to take advantage of the improved tariff structure. The measure aligns with India's broader trade liberalisation objectives under the comprehensive bilateral agreement with the United Kingdom, which also covers other goods and services.
The reduced duty structure is expected to enhance market competition in the premium spirits segment, potentially benefiting consumers through improved pricing. Importers responding to the department's invitation will need to meet specified criteria and regulatory requirements for alcohol imports into Delhi.
