Delhi shuts liquor shops ahead of planned protests over election chief

The Delhi Excise Department issued an order Thursday directing the closure of all liquor vends across the capital on October 9 and 10, citing inputs from Delhi Police regarding the prevailing public order situation. The preventive measure is aimed at maintaining law and order during a period of heightened political activity in the city.

The closure order precedes planned protests by opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral irregularities. The Cockroach Janta Party has separately called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10.

Authorities have stepped up security preparations across Delhi, with more than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed ahead of the anticipated protests. A senior police officer stated Thursday that no permission has been granted for any gathering at Jantar Mantar and cautioned the public against participating in unauthorised assemblies.

The liquor shop closure is among several administrative measures being implemented to ensure public safety and order during the period of civil unrest.
