Delhi tightens winter pollution curbs with vehicle ban, construction halt

The national capital has announced a comprehensive set of restrictions aimed at mitigating seasonal air pollution, effective November 1 through February 28. Vehicles registered outside Delhi that fail to meet BS-VI emission standards will face a complete ban from operating within city limits between November 1 and January 31. The restrictions exempt CNG and electric vehicles, as well as essential services including ambulances, fire tenders and police vehicles.

Beyond the vehicular measures, authorities will suspend most dust-generating demolition and construction activities throughout the enforcement period. The city will also double parking fees to discourage private vehicle usage and mandate that government and private offices operate at 50 per cent physical capacity, promoting remote work arrangements.

The Delhi administration will deploy specialized enforcement teams and leverage technology for implementation, including automatic number plate recognition cameras and an AI-enabled Integrated Command and Control Centre, according to the Chief Minister's Office. These coordinated efforts represent an escalation in the city's annual campaign to address the severe air quality deterioration that typically characterizes the winter months in the region.
