NEW DELHI — Delhi's government will prohibit entry of older, non-BS6 compliant vehicles registered in other states beginning November 1 as part of a comprehensive Winter Action Plan designed to combat seasonal air pollution.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the measure on Wednesday, stating that the restriction aims to significantly reduce atmospheric particulate matter and improve air quality during the winter months when pollution levels typically spike across the national capital.
The ban will apply to all vehicles that do not meet BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) emission standards and are registered outside Delhi. The measure forms part of a broader anti-pollution initiative running through January 31, 2026.
Industry observers note that the Winter Action Plan represents an escalation of Delhi's pollution management strategy. Previous years have seen similar seasonal measures, but enforcement has often remained inconsistent. Officials indicated that the 2026 plan would include increased monitoring at entry points to the city.
The move comes as Delhi faces persistent air quality challenges during winter months, when cooler temperatures trap pollutants closer to ground level, exacerbating health risks for residents. Environmental experts have long advocated for stricter vehicle emission controls as part of a multi-pronged approach to tackling the capital's air pollution crisis.
