Delhi to ban polluting vehicles from outside state starting November
The Delhi government will enforce a seasonal ban on non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside the city from November 1 to combat winter air pollution. The measure exempts electric vehicles and CNG-powered cars from the restriction.

Delhi is set to implement a three-month vehicular restriction aimed at controlling seasonal air quality deterioration as temperatures drop and pollution levels typically spike. Beginning November 1 and extending through January 31, the capital will prohibit the entry of non-BS-VI emission standard vehicles registered outside Delhi, with limited exceptions.
Electric vehicles and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles will be exempt from the ban, allowing cleaner-running automobiles to continue operating across state borders. The restriction targets older, more polluting vehicles that fail to meet BS-VI (Bharat Stage VI) emission standards, which represent India's most stringent vehicular pollution norms.
The seasonal measure reflects Delhi's persistent struggle with winter air quality, when meteorological conditions trap pollutants near the ground surface. By restricting the influx of high-emission vehicles during the winter months, authorities aim to reduce overall pollution load and improve air quality across the National Capital Region.
The ban represents one of several interventions deployed during winter to address Delhi's air pollution crisis, which regularly sees the city rank among the world's most polluted capitals during the colder months. Vehicle emissions contribute significantly to Delhi's fine particulate matter concentrations, necessitating multi-pronged approaches to improve public health outcomes.
