Delhi to build 61-km corridor along Najafgarh drain to ease traffic

The Public Works Department (PWD) has announced plans to engage a consultant for a feasibility study and detailed project plan for the ambitious infrastructure initiative, officials confirmed on Friday. The project, first unveiled in February, aims to connect Wazirabad to North Delhi through the proposed elevated corridor, targeting one of the city's most congested stretches.

The corridor will feature multiple segments designed to decongest the heavily trafficked route. According to the PWD's specifications, roads will be developed from Chhawla to Basaidarapur on both sides of the drain, covering 27.415 kilometres on each bank for a combined 54.83 kilometres. Additionally, a 5.94-kilometre two-lane road will be constructed on the left bank between Jhatikra Bridge and Chhawla Bridge.

"The stretch experiences severe congestion due to a combination of slow-moving vehicles and cross-movements during both peak and non-peak hours," a PWD official stated. The feasibility study will assess traffic patterns, environmental impact, and construction feasibility before the project commences. The elevated corridor design is intended to minimize disruptions to local traffic while providing an alternative route for through traffic in North and Northwest Delhi.
