Delhi to crack down on invalid vehicle pollution certificates from October

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Saturday that the state government would begin enforcing stricter compliance with Pollution Under Control certificate requirements from October 1. The enforcement drive aims to ensure vehicles on Delhi roads meet emission standards, a key step in the government's air quality improvement strategy.

Gupta inaugurated an Automated Testing Station in Burari while unveiling the initiative. "We want to ensure that every person in Delhi gets clean air to breathe. This enforcement will be done to check whether the Pollution Under Control certificates are valid," she said. The chief minister noted that the government pursues air pollution reduction measures year-round, with the PUC enforcement drive representing one component of this comprehensive approach.

Beyond the enforcement mechanism, the government plans to strengthen the reliability of PUC testing centres across Delhi. Authorities will leverage technology to improve monitoring and operational efficiency of these centres, addressing concerns about the consistency of certificate issuance. The dual approach—stricter enforcement coupled with system upgrades—is intended to create more credible compliance with vehicle emission standards across the Delhi National Capital Region.
