Delhi to Double Parking Fees, Mandate Remote Work to Combat Winter Smog

Delhi's government has unveiled a comprehensive Winter Pollution Action Plan that will see parking fees doubled and require at least 50 percent of office staff to work remotely during the winter months. The stringent measures aim to reduce vehicular emissions and congestion during the period when air quality typically deteriorates sharply across the National Capital Region.

The consolidated action plan, originally notified in July, will become operational annually from November 1 through February 28. The dual approach targets both transportation-related pollution through increased parking costs and workplace emissions by reducing the number of commuters on Delhi's roads.

The work-from-home directive applies to government offices and private establishments, while the escalated parking fees are expected to discourage unnecessary vehicular movement during winter months when meteorological conditions trap pollutants near the ground. Officials project these measures will contribute to measurable improvements in air quality during the most critical pollution season.
