Delhi to fund 75% of heritage restoration projects under new scheme

The Delhi government has unveiled a new heritage conservation scheme aimed at enhancing restoration and preservation efforts across the capital's historical monuments and structures. Under the initiative, the government will bear 75 per cent of the cost for eligible heritage projects, significantly reducing the financial burden on owners and stakeholders involved in conservation work.

The scheme establishes a maximum assistance limit of Rs 2 crore per project in a financial year. However, this ceiling is not absolute. A dedicated committee has been empowered to review individual projects and recommend enhanced funding levels when monuments require substantial restoration work that exceeds the baseline allocation.

The framework reflects the government's commitment to preserving Delhi's rich architectural and historical legacy while making conservation economically viable for project proponents. By covering a substantial majority of costs, the scheme aims to encourage property owners and heritage organizations to undertake much-needed maintenance and restoration of structures of cultural significance.

The provision for flexible funding through committee review ensures that complex restoration projects involving intricate conservation challenges can access proportionate resources. This approach allows the government to balance fiscal responsibility with the diverse needs of monuments across different categories and conditions.
