Delhi to launch PUC enforcement drive, crack down on expired certificates

The Delhi government is preparing to launch a comprehensive enforcement action targeting vehicles with invalid or expired Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates from October 1 onwards. The initiative marks an escalation in the capital's efforts to tackle vehicular emissions and environmental pollution.

The enforcement drive will focus on identifying and penalising vehicles operating without current PUC certification. Penalties for non-compliance can reach ₹10,000, providing a significant deterrent against violations. The action comes as authorities seek to tighten oversight of vehicle emissions in the densely populated national capital region.

Beyond penalty enforcement, the government is also working to strengthen the credibility and effectiveness of PUC centres themselves. Officials plan to enhance monitoring of these certification facilities to ensure they maintain proper standards and procedures. This two-pronged approach—stricter enforcement combined with improved PUC centre oversight—is intended to create a more robust emission control system.

The PUC certificate, mandatory for all registered vehicles, certifies that a vehicle's pollution levels comply with government standards. Regular checks and certification renewals are essential for maintaining air quality in urban areas. The October 1 drive reflects New Delhi's continued focus on combating air pollution, a persistent challenge during winter months when smog levels frequently reach hazardous levels.
