Delhi to phase out new petrol light goods vehicles from 2027

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued a directive requiring the phased elimination of new petrol and diesel light goods vehicles in Delhi, with restrictions beginning in 2027. The order targets N1 and N2 category vehicles—light commercial vehicles with gross vehicle weights between 3.5 and 12 tonnes—and applies across the capital and surrounding NCR districts.

Under the new framework, manufacturers and dealers will be prohibited from registering fresh non-electric light commercial vehicles in Delhi from 2027. The restrictions are designed to accelerate the adoption of electric alternatives and reduce emissions from the commercial transport sector, a significant contributor to the region's air pollution.

The ban is expected to expand progressively to high-density districts and the wider NCR region in subsequent years. The CAQM's move aligns with India's broader environmental objectives and represents a significant shift in transport policy for one of Asia's most polluted metropolitan areas.

The directive follows mounting concerns over Delhi's air quality, particularly during winter months when pollution levels spike. By incentivizing an industry-wide transition to electric vehicles, authorities aim to improve air standards while supporting India's clean energy transition goals.
