The Confederation of Trade and Industry (CTI) has raised concerns about the economic impact of the opposition alliance's rally held Sunday at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. According to the traders' body, the event resulted in significant disruptions to commercial activity in the vicinity, with approximately 80 per cent of shops in the area remaining shut during the rally.
Beyond retail operations, the gathering also hampered transport connectivity in one of Delhi's central locations. The combined effect of shop closures and transport disruptions prompted the CTI to quantify the losses at approximately ₹11,000 crore, though the methodology behind this calculation remains unclear.
The incident highlights the tension between political activity and commercial interests in Delhi's high-traffic zones. Ramlila Maidan, historically significant as a venue for public gatherings and cultural events, frequently hosts large-scale political and social assemblies that can affect business operations in surrounding commercial districts.
The traders' grievance underscores ongoing concerns about advance notice and coordination between event organisers and the business community when major public events are planned in commercially sensitive areas of the capital.
