Delhi traders report massive losses from INDIA bloc's Ramlila Maidan rally

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has quantified the economic impact of Sunday's INDIA bloc rally, with Chairman Brijesh Goyal stating that approximately ₹10,000-11,000 crore in business was lost across Delhi's commercial districts. The rally at Ramlila Maidden triggered widespread market closures in the surrounding area, one of the city's most historically significant trading zones.

According to data compiled from trader groups affiliated with the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), roughly 2.5 lakh shops out of the approximately 3 lakh operating establishments in the affected markets remained closed on Sunday. The 20 to 25 major markets most impacted by the disruption include some of Delhi's oldest and most prominent commercial hubs.

Goyal attributed the widespread shutdowns primarily to apprehension among traders regarding the anticipated influx of rally participants and vehicular congestion. While the rally itself did not directly disrupt trading operations, the scale of expected attendance prompted merchants to preemptively close their establishments as a precautionary measure.

The incident highlights the intersection of political activity and commercial interests in India's capital, where major public events routinely impact the livelihoods of traders operating in central Delhi's densely packed market areas. Trading associations have previously raised concerns about inadequate advance notice and coordination between event organizers and the business community regarding such large-scale gatherings.
