Delhi traders seek Congress rally postponement amid festive season disruption fears

The Confederation of Trade and Industry (CTI) has urged the Congress party to reschedule its proposed mass rally, warning that the event could severely disrupt commercial activities across central and old Delhi at a critical time for retail business. In correspondence addressed to Sonia Gandhi, the traders' body flagged concerns about the anticipated congregation of approximately 10 lakh participants, which could obstruct access to major commercial hubs during the festive shopping period.

The letter emphasized the scale of potential economic impact, with the CTI estimating losses spanning both wholesale and retail sectors in the densely populated market areas of central and old Delhi. The association did not seek a complete cancellation but rather requested that organizers consider an alternative date that would minimise disruption to commercial operations.

The appeal highlights the delicate balance between political activity and economic interests in India's capital, where major civic events frequently intersect with high-traffic commercial zones. Delhi's wholesale and retail markets experience peak activity during the festival season, making the timing of large public gatherings a sensitive issue for business stakeholders.

The traders' intervention represents a rare instance of the business community formally engaging with political leadership over event scheduling. Such appeals typically carry significant weight given the organized nature of Delhi's commercial sector and its economic contribution to the city's revenue.
