Delhi's trading community has sounded an alarm over potential economic losses as large-scale protests loom during the festive shopping season. Merchants have cautioned that demonstrations could cost the regional economy approximately Rs 10,000 crore by Diwali, citing the strategic location of proposed protest sites.
The primary concern centers on Ramlila Maidan as a potential demonstration venue. The location's proximity to Delhi's major wholesale trading hubs—including Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, and Chawri Bazar—presents a significant challenge for the trading community during the weeks preceding Diwali, India's most important shopping festival.
These wholesale markets typically experience peak commercial activity during the pre-Diwali period, with merchants stocking inventory and consumers engaging in festive purchasing. Traders argue that disruptions at this critical juncture would undermine already-fragile sales momentum and impact the economic calendar for the festival season.
The traders' concerns reflect broader tensions between citizens' rights to demonstrate and the commercial interests of the business community. Industry representatives have urged authorities to consider alternative protest locations that would minimise economic disruption while accommodating legitimate grievances, though details of the underlying protest issues remain unclear from trader statements.
