Delhi traffic police flag design flaw in new Barapullah flyover

The Barapullah Phase-III flyover, which opened to the public last week, is already creating bottlenecks due to structural design issues at a critical junction. The three-lane elevated corridor merges abruptly into a two-lane existing stretch of the Barapullah corridor near Sundial Park, while two additional three-lane approaches converge at the same point, creating a traffic nightmare for commuters.

Delhi Traffic Police have formally requested the Delhi Public Works Department to urgently redesign the merger point, citing the sharp and poorly planned junction as the primary cause of deteriorating traffic conditions. Officials said the abrupt lane reduction is exacerbating congestion on one of the capital's busiest routes.

Commuters have reported significant delays on the nearly 8-kilometer stretch between Safdarjung Hospital and Sarai Kale Khan since the Phase-III opening. Journey times that should take 20-30 minutes are stretching to over an hour during peak hours, with Thursday evening witnessing particularly severe congestion.

A joint inspection by senior traffic police and PWD officials conducted on October 1 confirmed that the junction design requires immediate modification. The traffic police have emphasized the need for urgent intervention to prevent the new infrastructure project from becoming a permanent congestion point on the corridor.
