The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has secured administrative approval for a significant sewerage infrastructure project aimed at reducing sewage overflow incidents across the city. The board's governing body has sanctioned the estimated project cost of ₹148.90 crore, clearing the path for construction of the new pipeline network.
The planned pipeline will feature a 1,800mm diameter and traverse the Yamuna floodplain, forming part of the water utility's broader strategy to address sewage management challenges. The large-capacity pipeline is expected to augment the city's existing sewerage system's ability to handle wastewater flow.
Sewage overflow has remained a persistent challenge in Delhi, particularly during monsoon seasons when heavy rainfall overloads the existing drainage infrastructure. The new pipeline project represents one of several capital investments the DJB has undertaken in recent years to modernize and expand the city's wastewater treatment capacity.
The project now moves forward with the administrative approval secured, paving the way for procurement, tendering, and subsequent construction phases. Once operational, the new infrastructure is expected to provide relief to multiple zones across Delhi's sewerage network.
