The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated a major pipeline replacement programme in South Delhi valued at ₹6,044 crore, addressing decades of wear in the water distribution network. The project will involve replacing 733 kilometres of deteriorating pipes that have contributed to leakage and supply inconsistencies across the region.
Spanning three years, the infrastructure overhaul is designed to serve around 25 lakh people spread across 247 square kilometres of South Delhi. The initiative represents one of the capital's most significant water infrastructure investments in recent years, targeting the reduction of non-revenue water loss and improving service reliability for millions of households.
The pipeline replacement programme forms part of broader efforts to modernise Delhi's water distribution system, which has faced chronic challenges related to ageing infrastructure and inadequate capacity. By systematically replacing old conduits with modern piping systems, the DJB aims to enhance water pressure consistency and reduce contamination risks across the sprawling service area.
Official sources indicate the project is critical for meeting growing demand in South Delhi's densely populated zones, where population expansion has outpaced infrastructure development. The phased approach will prioritise high-loss zones and areas experiencing frequent supply disruptions, ensuring maximum impact during the implementation period.
