Demat Account Additions Slip in September on Monthly Basis

New demat account additions declined 11.5 percent in September to 2.89 million, reversing the momentum from the previous month's surge. The month-on-month contraction reflects a normalization after August's exceptional performance, though the broader trend remains supportive of continued retail participation in equities.

Despite September's decline on a sequential basis, the quarter ended with notably strong additions, marking the highest quarterly total since the October-December 2024 period. The resilience in third-quarter figures underscores sustained interest from retail investors entering the securities market.

Analysts attribute the quarter's strength to continued activity in the primary market, where new initial public offerings and public share sales have maintained investor engagement. The steady flow of capital into new issues has provided a consistent driver of demat account growth over the period.

The sequential decline in September is not uncommon as markets often experience month-to-month volatility in retail participation metrics. Market participants will monitor October figures closely to assess whether the third-quarter momentum extends into the final quarter of the year, particularly given upcoming festival season spending patterns and year-end investment activity typically seen among retail investors.
