Dembele, Kane, Mbappe emerge as top Ballon d'Or contenders

Defending champion Ousmane Dembele, England's Harry Kane and France's Kylian Mbappe have emerged as frontrunners in the race for the men's Ballon d'Or, according to the nominees announced Tuesday by France Football magazine.

In the women's category, two-time winner Alexia Putellas, Poland's Ewa Pajor and Haiti's Melchie Dumornay are among the favourites to claim the award. However, three-time consecutive winner Aitana Bonmati failed to make the cut following an injury-plagued season, despite her return to action during Barcelona's quadruple-winning campaign that included a fourth Champions League crown.

Both Dembele and Mbappe represented France at the FIFA World Cup, where the team reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champions Spain. While securing major trophies traditionally strengthens Ballon d'Or candidacy, Mbappe has already written himself into the history books by surpassing Lionel Messi's all-time World Cup goal record with 22 goals achieved in fewer matches.

The award ceremony in London will conclude weeks of speculation and anticipation surrounding the prestigious individual honours, which recognise the year's best football talent across both men's and women's competitions.
