Dengue cases surge past 94,000 in Sri Lanka this year

Dengue infections in Sri Lanka have climbed to 94,805 cases this year, marking a significant public health concern for the nation. The sharp rise in confirmed cases underscores the persistent threat posed by the Aedes mosquito, which thrives in tropical climates and urban environments across the country.

The outbreak has strained health facilities and prompted calls for intensified vector control measures. Authorities have emphasised the importance of community participation in reducing breeding grounds, particularly in stagnant water sources where mosquitoes proliferate during warmer months.

Health officials have recommended residents take precautionary measures including the use of insect repellent, proper clothing coverage, and household fumigation. Early symptoms of dengue fever include sudden onset of high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rash, typically appearing three to fourteen days after mosquito bite exposure.

The disease remains a recurring seasonal challenge for Sri Lanka, with cases typically peaking during and after monsoon periods when humidity and rainfall create ideal breeding conditions. Authorities continue to conduct surveillance operations and public awareness campaigns to control the spread of the virus.
