Denmark's government has lodged a formal complaint against Russia following an encounter between a Russian warship and a Danish military helicopter operating over the Baltic Sea. According to Copenhagen, the Russian vessel fired flares in proximity to the Danish aircraft, prompting swift condemnation from Danish leadership.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen characterized the incident as "reckless" behaviour, emphasizing concerns about maritime safety and military conduct in the region. The Danish armed forces confirmed the engagement took place but provided limited additional details about the circumstances or the helicopter's mission at the time.
The incident adds to longstanding tensions between NATO members and Russia in the Baltic region, an area of significant strategic importance. Denmark, which holds the NATO presidency, has maintained a cautious but firm stance toward Russian military activities near its territorial waters and airspace.
