DENR escalates forest protection push as El Niño threat looms
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is ramping up forest conservation efforts nationwide, targeting critical watersheds with expanded patrols and accelerated reforestation programs ahead of anticipated El Niño conditions.

MANILA — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is intensifying its forest management strategy to mitigate the impact of recurring El Niño weather patterns on the country's water security.
Forests play a critical role in maintaining water availability for communities during extended dry periods, absorbing and regulating water flow through watersheds. With El Niño episodes occurring at regular intervals every few years, the DENR has launched an expanded initiative focusing on both protective measures and restoration efforts across priority water catchment areas.
The agency's two-pronged approach includes enhanced forest protection patrols to prevent illegal logging and unauthorized land clearing, while simultaneously accelerating reforestation campaigns in degraded watershed regions. These measures aim to strengthen forests' capacity to retain moisture, stabilize streamflow, minimize soil erosion, and facilitate groundwater recharge.
The initiative reflects growing recognition among environmental officials that robust forest cover serves as a natural buffer against climate variability. By restoring and safeguarding forest ecosystems in strategic locations, authorities expect to enhance the country's resilience to periodic droughts and ensure sustained water supplies for agricultural, industrial, and domestic needs nationwide.
