DENR launches monitoring system to protect rare Samar Rafflesia flower

TACLOBAN CITY — Environmental officials are establishing a Biodiversity Monitoring System to safeguard the endangered Samar Rafflesia, a rare flowering species found in the forests of Samar Island.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Samar Island Natural Park has undertaken the conservation initiative following the recent rediscovery and documentation of Rafflesia manillana in Sitio Bagong Silang, Barangay Guirang in Basey town. The finding marks a significant development for botanical conservation efforts in the region.

The monitoring system represents a coordinated effort to track the population and habitat conditions of the rare plant species. By establishing baseline data and regular surveillance mechanisms, environmental authorities aim to implement targeted protection measures for the Rafflesia and its native forest ecosystem.

The Samar Rafflesia is among the Philippines' most threatened plant species, with limited known populations across the archipelago. Conservation experts consider habitat preservation and regulated access to critical sites essential components of any long-term survival strategy for the species.
