The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has launched a coordinated nationwide effort to prepare communities for the effects of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon. The agency has mobilized its regional offices, line bureaus, and field units to implement strengthened preparedness and mitigation measures across the country.

The move comes as the Department of Science and Technology's Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned that the El Niño event could develop into a very strong occurrence before the end of 2026 and continue persisting into the following year. Such intensification would pose significant challenges to water resources, agriculture, and food security across multiple regions.

The DENR's comprehensive response includes coordination among various government units to address potential impacts on environment and natural resources. Regional offices have been directed to assess vulnerabilities in their respective jurisdictions and implement targeted interventions to minimize climate-related risks to vulnerable communities.

The environmental department's action represents a preventive approach to disaster management, focusing on early preparation rather than reactive response. Officials have emphasized the importance of community engagement and inter-agency cooperation in building resilience against prolonged dry conditions expected from the strengthening El Niño pattern.
