MANILA — Environment Secretary Juan Miguel "Mitch" Cuna has directed intensified monitoring of flood risks across the Philippines, instructing relevant agencies to strengthen early warning systems and boost enforcement of environmental protection measures.
The DENR chief's order comes in the wake of severe flooding in Nepal that highlighted vulnerabilities in watershed management and disaster preparedness across the South Asian region. Cuna emphasized the need for science-based approaches to reduce flood hazards affecting downstream communities, particularly in low-lying and urbanized areas.
The enhanced monitoring initiative will leverage cutting-edge technology including drone surveillance, satellite imagery analysis, and near-real-time forest disturbance alert systems. These tools are designed to detect environmental threats and land-use violations early, enabling rapid response before conditions deteriorate into major flooding events.
