DENR warns of severe coral bleaching risk from powerful El Niño
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has raised concerns about potential damage to Philippine marine ecosystems as a particularly intense El Niño phenomenon approaches. Officials are bracing for widespread coral bleaching and other environmental impacts expected to intensify in early 2024.

MANILA — Environmental authorities are closely monitoring the approach of an exceptionally strong El Niño weather pattern, expressing concern about its potential consequences for the country's marine resources and coastal ecosystems.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said it is tracking possible coral bleaching events and other adverse effects on marine life as elevated sea surface temperatures are forecast to intensify. The warming trend, expected to become more pronounced in the coming months, poses significant risks to reef systems and dependent marine species throughout Philippine waters.
Coral bleaching occurs when prolonged exposure to abnormally warm water causes corals to expel symbiotic algae, leading to loss of color and, if conditions persist, death of the organisms. The phenomenon can have cascading effects throughout marine food webs and impact communities dependent on healthy reef systems for food security and livelihoods.
The DENR has indicated it will continue monitoring oceanic conditions and coordinate preparedness measures with relevant agencies. The advisory underscores growing concerns about climate impacts on one of Southeast Asia's most biodiverse marine regions, already facing pressures from overfishing and pollution.
