Dental practitioners seek health minister's intervention on staircase regulations

The Malaysian Private Dental Practitioners' Association has called on Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad to intervene in implementing new staircase regulations for dental clinics located on upper floors of buildings.

The association contends that the regulation was adopted without adequately considering the practical constraints faced by practitioners operating in older buildings, where retrofitting staircase infrastructure to meet new standards presents significant challenges and costs.

The dispute highlights tensions between health authorities seeking to standardize safety and operational requirements across dental facilities and private practitioners managing established clinics in heritage or aging structures. Many upper-floor dental clinics operate in commercial buildings constructed prior to current building codes and safety standards.

The practitioners argue that a one-size-fits-all approach fails to account for the diverse architectural realities of Malaysia's existing building stock, particularly in urban areas where dental practices have long been established in converted shophouses and older commercial complexes.

The association's appeal to the health minister represents an effort to secure regulatory flexibility or transition provisions that would allow existing clinics to achieve compliance without prohibitive renovation expenses or forced relocations.
