MANILA — The Department of Education and the Department of the Interior and Local Government plan to sign a formal agreement governing the deployment of barangay tanods, or village watchmen, in public schools nationwide.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Roger Masapol announced Monday that the two agencies are moving forward with the memorandum of agreement to regularize a practice that has already been implemented in schools around the country.

The formal pact aims to establish clear guidelines and protocols for tanod participation in school security operations. The arrangement seeks to address safety concerns in educational institutions by leveraging existing community security structures at the local level.

Official details regarding the specific terms, responsibilities, and scope of the tanods' duties in schools are expected to be finalized as the two departments complete negotiations on the agreement.

The collaboration between DepEd and DILG represents an effort to strengthen school safety measures using available barangay resources and personnel already positioned within local communities.
