DepEd enlists parents, teachers to revive student math proficiency

MANILA — The Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to improve mathematics competency among Filipino students by bringing together teachers, tutors, and parents under a unified recovery program.

The Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Mathematics Program, established under DepEd Memorandum No. 060, s. 2026, aims to address persistent gaps in mathematical proficiency by leveraging collaborative support systems across the education ecosystem. The initiative will be rolled out in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide, targeting students from grades 1 through 10.

The program reflects recognition that mathematics recovery requires coordinated effort beyond classroom walls. By mobilizing parents and tutors alongside educators, DepEd seeks to create multiple reinforcement touchpoints for student learning. The approach acknowledges that family engagement and supplementary academic support can significantly enhance learning outcomes, particularly for students who have fallen behind.

Implementation of ARAL Mathematics represents part of broader efforts to strengthen foundational competencies and rebuild academic progress following pandemic-related disruptions to schooling. The program's multi-stakeholder framework positions parents as active participants in their children's mathematical development rather than passive observers.

Details regarding specific program components, training protocols for participating teachers and tutors, and resource allocation mechanisms are expected to be disseminated to schools as implementation commences.
