DepEd rolls out heat preparedness plan as El Niño threat looms through 2027

The Department of Education has launched a proactive set of protocols designed to shield students and staff from the mounting threat of sustained heat stress, as meteorological officials warn of an intensifying El Niño pattern expected to persist across the coming years.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the need for early action, stating that schools cannot delay response measures until severe heat events materialize. The department's four-pillar framework, referred to as the 4H initiative, prioritizes preparation, coordination, and structured implementation across the education system.

The guidelines address critical areas including classroom cooling measures, adjusted academic schedules, increased water and sanitation provisions, and health monitoring protocols for vulnerable student populations. Schools are being directed to identify heat-vulnerable facilities and develop contingency plans ahead of projected peak heat months.

Weather authorities have indicated that the current El Niño episode represents a significant climatic event for the region. The DepEd's advance planning aims to minimize disruptions to learning while safeguarding the welfare of the nation's student population during an extended period of elevated temperatures.

Education officials are coordinating with local government units and health agencies to ensure comprehensive implementation of the heat preparedness measures throughout the school system.
