DepEd saves P1.4 billion through competitive bidding for teacher laptops

MANILA — The Department of Education successfully completed a landmark procurement of more than 231,000 laptops for public school teachers through an open bidding process, securing at least P1.4 billion in cost savings, Education Secretary Sonny Angara announced Friday.

The competitive bidding approach enabled DepEd to acquire 169,008 Mac-based laptops and 62,717 Windows-based units at substantially reduced prices compared to what would have been paid through negotiated procurement methods. The initiative represents a significant shift toward transparent purchasing practices within the department.

The laptop distribution is part of DepEd's broader efforts to equip teachers with modern educational technology. By leveraging open competition among suppliers, the department demonstrated how transparent procurement processes can deliver both fiscal discipline and quality outcomes for the public education system.

The savings achieved through this procurement underscore the potential for government agencies to maximize budget efficiency while ensuring fair competition among vendors. DepEd's approach serves as a model for other departments seeking to balance cost-effectiveness with transparency in large-scale equipment acquisitions.
