DepEd shifts to data-driven model for class suspension decisions

MANILA — The Department of Education announced Thursday it is adopting a data-driven methodology for determining class suspensions, moving beyond the previous practice of blanket cancellations across the country. The shift follows Executive Order No. 130 recently signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., signaling a more targeted approach to educational disruptions.

Under the new framework, DepEd is finalizing a comprehensive joint memorandum circular in coordination with partner agencies to establish clear criteria and protocols for class suspensions. The move aims to minimize unnecessary disruptions to the school calendar while still protecting students and personnel when conditions genuinely warrant closure.

The data-driven approach is expected to consider multiple factors including weather conditions, infrastructure assessments, and safety evaluations at the local level rather than implementing system-wide decisions. This methodology would allow schools and divisions to make more informed, contextual decisions based on their specific circumstances.

The development of the guidelines reflects ongoing efforts by the education department to balance operational flexibility with academic continuity, ensuring students maintain consistent access to classroom instruction while maintaining safety standards.
