DepEd urges schools to adopt AI tool for faster disaster response

MANILA — The Department of Education is promoting the adoption of Project Ligtas+, an artificial intelligence-aided assessment tool aimed at improving how schools respond to disasters and protect students from extended learning interruptions.

Education Secretary Angara issued the directive Wednesday, urging school heads nationwide to integrate the hazard evaluation system into their existing disaster preparedness protocols. The initiative reflects the government's commitment to leveraging technology in safeguarding educational continuity amid increasingly frequent natural disasters affecting the archipelago.

Project Ligtas+ enables institutions to conduct rapid hazard assessments and identify vulnerabilities in their infrastructure and operations before emergencies occur. By adopting the tool, schools are expected to develop more effective contingency plans and respond swiftly when disasters strike, potentially reducing the number of class suspension days and academic losses.

The DepEd statement emphasized that early warning systems and preparedness measures are essential components of comprehensive school safety protocols.
