Justin Miller, a content creator focused on home design, purchased what appeared to be an unremarkable chair from Facebook Marketplace for $50, unaware of its true provenance. Upon closer examination and research, Miller identified the piece as an authentic creation by Frits Henningsen, the acclaimed Danish furniture designer known for his meticulous craftsmanship and innovative modernist designs.
Following authentication, the chair underwent professional restoration to bring it to gallery-quality condition. Sotheby's valued the restored furniture at between $30,000 and $50,000 ahead of its auction, reflecting both its rarity and historical significance in the design world.
The auction results far exceeded expectations, with the Henningsen chair ultimately selling for $107,950 when including buyer's premiums. The sale demonstrates the potential for discovering valuable pieces in second-hand online marketplaces, where authenticated designer furniture occasionally surfaces at a fraction of its market value.
Miller has continued to scout platforms like Facebook Marketplace for additional valuable items, underscoring a broader trend of design enthusiasts and collectors seeking rare vintage and mid-century pieces through digital resale channels. The substantial profit from the chair sale has positioned Miller to pursue similar acquisitions with greater confidence in identifying overlooked designer works.
