Despite thousands of online friends, Gen Z reports rising loneliness

Generation Z in India faces a paradox of modern social life: despite maintaining extensive networks across social media platforms and digital communication channels, a significant majority report feeling isolated and emotionally disconnected.

According to research findings, approximately 80 percent of Gen Z respondents acknowledged experiencing loneliness within the past 12 months. The data underscores a growing mental health concern among India's digital natives, who have grown up with smartphones and online connectivity as central to their social lives.

Experts point to several factors contributing to the phenomenon. Prolonged screen time and reliance on digital communication have gradually replaced in-person interactions, reducing opportunities for meaningful face-to-face engagement. While online platforms enable users to maintain contact with hundreds or thousands of connections, these digital relationships often lack the emotional depth and authentic connection that characterize physical presence.

The findings highlight a critical distinction between social connectivity and genuine human connection. Online interactions, while convenient and abundant, frequently fail to provide the psychological fulfillment that comes from direct personal engagement. Mental health professionals suggest that Gen Z may require deliberate efforts to balance digital communication with in-person social activities to address underlying feelings of isolation.
