MANILA — Detained Senator Jinggoy Estrada arrived at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City on Wednesday afternoon to undergo a medical examination, court records show. Estrada, who is being held in connection with a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan, was escorted by jail personnel during the hospital visit.

The senator was granted authorization by the anti-graft court to leave detention temporarily for the procedure, which involved imaging of his knee. Officials did not disclose further details regarding the examination or its findings.

Estrada's medical visit represents one of several instances in which high-profile detainees have been permitted to access healthcare facilities outside their place of detention. The Sandiganbayan has discretion to authorize such temporary releases when medical necessity is demonstrated.
